Pharmacist CPR

Pharmacist CPR is designed for pharmacists to meet required professional standards

The Pharmacist CPR course is designed explicitly for pharmacists who need to refresh their CPR skills every three years, as the Pharmacy Council’s first aid policy requires. It will cover all the necessary skills to manage a life-threatening emergency.

PURPOSE
This 3-hour resuscitation course aims to refresh pharmacists’ skills, knowledge, and confidence in providing relevant first aid in emergencies. It emphasises practical skills in an interactive learning environment and meets the requirements of Appendix 4.4 of the 2024 v3 Immunisation Handbook for vaccinators.

During the session, the attendees will be instructed on correct resuscitation techniques and will practice their skills.

RECOMMENDED FOR

This course suits pharmacists who need to refresh their CPR skills every three years, as the Pharmacy Council’s first aid policy requires.

This Pharmacist CPR course is not suited for pharmacists entering the profession, as they need a full 12-hour Extended First Aid course.

This course suits authorised and pharmacist vaccinators who must biannually revalidate their resuscitation certification. It is suited for both new vaccinators and those revalidating their skills.

Pharmacist CPR covers

The course contains theory and practical scenarios covering the following topics:

  • Primary assessment
  • Adult, child & infant CPR, including mouth-to-mask technique
  • Automated external defibrillator (AED)
  • Foreign body airway obstruction
  • One- and two-person bag valve mask ventilation
  • Management of Anaphylaxis (Pharmacology, IM, Autoinjector)

All our Pharmacist CPR courses are based on current ANZCOR guidelines and presented by the New Zealand Resuscitation Council certified instructors to ensure pharmacists are equipped with the most up-to-date and practical resuscitation skills and techniques.

PREREQUISITES AND REQUIREMENTS

The course is only available for pharmacists to meet their minimum required professional standards but is also suitable for pharmacist vaccinators.

Learners must be physically capable of kneeling on the floor to do CPR.

Important note: The course does not replace workplace first aid-compliant training or required biannual first aid revalidation.

Pharmacists who are designated workplace first aid providers must comply with WorkSafe New Zealand requirements regarding first aid competency. Generally, they must maintain their workplace first aid qualification through regular bi-annual First Aid Refresher courses.

COST
The price includes a First Aid Manual book: $149 incl. GST per person

Group booking: from $950+GST for up to 10 people.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES

Pharmacists practising in a primary care, patient-facing setting in the community must be able to provide first aid. A pharmacist’s ethical and professional duty is to provide emergency first aid where necessary, in line with their professional role and expertise. At a minimum, they must maintain competence in Basic Life Support by completing a refresher course in CPR once every three years. This should be recorded as part of a continuing professional development process.

Individual pharmacists may maintain higher competence than the Pharmacy Council requires. The decision should be based on self-reflection and assessment of their and their community’s requirements.

For example, a pharmacist practising next to a medical centre may only need to refresh CPR at least every three years. In contrast, a pharmacist in a remote or rural setting may want to maintain their medical emergency training at a higher level, such as an Advanced Resuscitation (ACLS) course.

The Pharmacist CPR class is a 3-hour face-to-face course that we run in Auckland, Wellington, Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North and Christchurch.

Private group courses are available across New Zealand. Contact Us to learn more about booking a private Pharmacist CPR course for your organisation.
